Lounging around inside, and making a few cell phone calls while getting ready for the big party outside.

Most of the adults sedately, and perhaps somewhat dully, sat around while the kids had more fun playing in the yard.

Mixing up the dirt for a really great mud pie is hard work. Is it a coincidence that there is more than a small a resemblance here to the chocolate cake that later made an appearance?

Not content with a simple cake, a second layer is added.

The messy adults just sit around while the kids have to do all the cleanup work. One cannot trust them to leave a treasured cup of ice alone, so Mikaela is forced to carry it around for protection while working.

Mikaela plots an escape, planning to fly away on her black broom, witch might not be a bad idea if Mommy doesn't get wind of it.

Finally getting around to the delicious chocolate birthday cake, Papa John gets a little help lighting and blowing out the candles from Marissa and Mikaela.

Cutting the cake is so boring... and far too slow. Marissa and Mikaela just dive in with their hands.

Papa, failing to understand the pleasure of smeared chocolate, soon insists on a little damage control cleanup.
