The cascades of Agua Azul (literally "Blue Water") are in Salto de Agua, 56 kilometers south of the ancient Maya metropolis of Palenque. The over 500 cascades of the Yaxha and Shumula Rivers flow hundreds of meters over limestone rock terraces between basins of turquoise clear water on its way into the Tulija River, all part of the Usumacinta River basin. The turquoise clear water is much more prevalent during the dry season (November until May) before the heavy rainfalls of summer and fall.
A path with numerous restaurants winds along the side of the cascades, and one can occasionally catch a glimpse of parrots, guacamayos and toucans.
